t it all fixed up. >> reporter: it will take them hours to fix it. you can see the fire hydrant that was knocked over when a water main broke open at 2:15 this morning and water was spewing several feet in the area at about 1500 gallons a minute on alisio for an hour and a half. luckily, the drainage is in good working order around here, no real flooding to report. the fire department shut the water off and it's still off for 13 homes as crews try to fix this mess. >> usually the hydrant breaks off but pipe is attached to it so it might be old pipe that broke. >> reporter: the damage to the asphalt on alisio drive will need to be repaired once they next it underneath. the water department is

scheduled to be here at 6:30 to fix it. is this a concern aging pipes around the area? they say not really. it just seemed as if this was this one's time to go. anne makovec, cbs 5. thank you for that. >> we better keep that umbrella handy just in case because we are going to see more showers today. volunteer good. you're on top of the weather today. >> we have been listening to you for the last hour. >> for the first time. keep the umbrella handy. we have clouds outside. the main area of low pressure drop into the south beginning to sweep up in our direction. you can see that in the south bay picking up more rainfall in that direction. so down toward gilroy, morgan hill, into the santa cruz mountains, monterey bay, you're seeing the rain picking up but this could sweep back in across the bay area throughout the day today so not a big storm system but some occasional showers are a possibility. you can see on the satellite image that low dropping to the south with all that moisture rotating around and moving back into the bay area. so we are going to keep it

unsettled for today. it's muggy out there now. we are getting some reports of fog. the temperatures running in the 40s and 50s. scattered showers highs in the 50s and 60s, much colder weather coming our way and more showers too. we'll talk about that in a moment. let's check the roads with elizabeth. >> here's a live look at the san mateo bridge. still 14 minutes out of hayward towards the high-rise and foster city on 92. so problem-free across the san mateo bridge. let's go driving. we have alan brooks with mobile5 and everything looks good eastbound 24 so he is heading know lafayette now. we saw no delay by the way in the commute direction approaching the caldecott tunnel a little earlier. so thanks, alan, for that live look at current road conditions once again heading towards walnut creek. elsewhere a live look at more bridges. golden gate bridge traffic so far flowing nicely out of marin county towards san francisco.

the nimitz 880 in oakland, they wrapped up roadwork. so all roads are open in hayward and downtown. surveillance video captured a man trying to kidnap a 13- year-old girl in san jose. the teenager fought hard and broke free. cbs 5 reporter cate caugiran is at the san jose police department with more on this investigation. cate. >> reporter: good morning. officers at the san jose police department are hoping this new surveillance video can lead to the arrest of the suspect. >> we slowed it down to get a closer look. first a victim wearing white gets snatched from behind. dragged into a dark driveway. police say the 13-year-old screamed and fought back. a few seconds later she broke free and ran down the street. police released this sketch of the suspect. this happened last friday morning on 33rd and saint james. officers commended the bill for

putting up the fight. >> it was a frightening situation and she fought back and escaped the perpetrator. >> officers say the suspect wore blue dickie's work pants with brown shoes stained with white paint. >> anyone with any information is asked to contact the officers here at the san jose police department. reporting live in san jose cate caugiran, cbs 5. brentwood union school district is under fire for standing behind an abusive teacher. dina holder was convicted of kicking an autistic child two years ago after the incident was reported the district moved her to another school. earlier this month the district settled with the victim's family for nearly a million dollars and removed holder from her teaching position. last night parents lashed out at the board for allowing holder to teach. >> i don't care what's written down in a procedures manual or anything like that.

i think that somebody should have took a stand and said we need to get her away from kids. >> district officials say it's difficult to fire tenured teachers such as holder. part of the settlement holder is on paid administrative leave and will resign at the end of this school year since holder was only charge with a misdemeanor she can still teach if another district wants to hire her. some other bay area headlines on this thursday. two people are in police custody after a fire broke out in a vacant victorian. this is on harrison street. the two were rescued from the roof of the burning home just after 5:00. according to the owner, the vacant property is known to house squatters. it took firefighters about three hours to put out the blaze. a man trying to cross a freeway on-ramp was hit and killed in oakland last night. an elderly man was trying to walk across the 17th street ramp to westbound 980 and was hit by three cars. one driver stopped, the other two did not. governor jerry brown will deliver the state of the state today.

he will lay out his policy agenda for the state which he says is on the rebounded. but he is expected to tell state lawmakers that an improving budget situation does not mean they can go on a spending spree. dianne feinstein will introduce an assault weapons ban in washington, d.c. today. the california democratic bill also bans high capacity ammunition clips in the wake of the sandy hook school shootings. her bill is also cosponsored by both of connecticut's senators. >> newtown changed things. >> we believe in our right to defend ourselves and our families with semi-automatic firearms technology. >> vice president joe biden continues his search for ways to curb gun violence. he is heading to virginia tomorrow. he will hold a rally to promote gun control and will hold online google forum chats to discuss the issue. san mateo county will hold a gun buy-back event this

saturday at the fairgrounds on delaware street. the county will offer $100 for handguns, shotguns and rifles. if you turn in an assault weapon you could earn up to $200. in recent months several bay area cities have held gun buy- back programs. this is oakland's successful event last december. new this morning, british officials warning of an imminent threat against westerners in libya and telling all uk nationals to get out of benghazi immediately. meanwhile secretary of state hillary clinton got emotional yesterday when asked about the deadly attack on the u.s. consulate there. >> i put my arms around the mothers and fathers the sisters and brothers sons and daughters and the wives left alone to raise their children. >> the senate and house foreign relations committee grilled her for more than five hours yesterday. the secretary says she is focused on trying to fix what went wrong. >> and secretary clinton's replacement will begin his

throughout the day. so if you are heading out grab the umbrella. mostly cloudy skies, we have some fog, temperatures fairly mild mainly in the 50s. i think this afternoon 50s and 60s with more scattered showers. looks like things staying unsettled now as finally that big ridge of high pressure is headed eastward. low pressure is dropping in just off the coastline sweeping in all those clouds back up in our direction so the moisture is coming up out of the south. a little bit of a muggy feel to it and maybe some occasional showers outside. computer models making its way through the bay area not a huge storm system just occasional showers sweeping on through. continuing into the evening hours, as well. so you get the idea, had clouds and rain that's about it. possible delays at sfo with all the clouds and showers the temperatures mainly in the 50s very cold though traveling across the country 27 degrees and snow in chicago could cause problems there. 28 and cold into new york.

most of the bay area dry. but you can see a little southward we are taking you in for a closer look and you can see that rainfall spreading into the santa cruz mountains along 101, gilroy and morgan hill. the watsonville area. and this is going to be sweeping back into the bay area throughout the day today. so it looks like things are going to stay unsettled outside. you see the low dropping southward but the rotation around that low is bringing that moisture in our direction. keep that umbrella handy. you may need that from time to time. numbers in the 40s and 50s. it will be muggy this afternoon with showers and highs only in the 50s and low 60s. more cold showers are on the way. we'll talk about that coming up. let's check the roads with elizabeth. >> it is getting busier now outside. we have a few more incidents coming in including a new accident westbound 80 in richmond approaching the central avenue exit so we are seeing brake lights. they are working to clear it

that surveillance video was taken from a neighbor who caught the struggle. now, we slowed it down so you can get a closer look. you can see right there that victim, she is in white as you can see as she is walking past that car, you see her get snatched from behind and dragged into a dark driveway. police say the 13-year-old fought and screamed. seconds later she broke free from the suspect and ran away. here's a sketch of the suspect. police say this happened early friday morning on 33rd and saint james street. turns out the girl screamed caught the attention of a nearby neighbor like manuel alvez. >> it wouldn't be pretty. i would have do what i had to do and then turn him to the authorities. >> reporter: alvez says he got into the car to look for the suspect but missed him by a minute. police say the suspect was wearing blue dickie's work pants with brown shoes with white paint stains on them and if you have any information, please contact the san jose police department. reporting live in san jose,

cate caugiran, cbs 5. all right, cate, thank you. some bay area headlines. oakland police have detained two people in connection with a fire at a vacant victorian house on harrison street. the two were rescued from the roof of the burning house just after 5 p.m. yesterday. according to the owner the vacant property is known to house squatters. it took firefighters three hours to put the fire out. a $26 million security system is approved for the new eastern span of the bay bridge. the system will include 175 video, infrared and thermal imaging cameras. the equipment will be atop the bridge and also under it. it will include a monitoring room. the system was originally expected to cost about $8 million. later this morning, we are going to get the governor's take on how things are going in the state of california. jerry brown will deliver his state of the state address to the legislature. the governor is expected to tell his fellow democrats who control the senate and the assembly that an improving

budget situation doesn't mean they can go on a spending spree. menlo park has given facebook a thumbs-up to build a second campus near its headquarters. the social network wants to develop a west campus where tyco electronics operated on the bay front expressway. in exchange, facebook will give the city more than a million dollars over the next 10 years. that does not include the nearly $200,000 facebook will pay in property taxes. california's senator dianne feinstein wants to reinstate a ban on certain firearmses across the country. she will introduce a bill to ban assault weapons and high capacity ammunition clips. it's co-sponsored by connecticut's democrat in the wake of the sandy hook elementary shooting. it's opposed by the nra. vice president joe biden will continue to discuss gun violence today at 10:45 our time. tough questions for secretary of state hillary clinton on the attack on the

actually started two days ago... bringing out about a thir crews are back on the scene of a major warehouse fire in chicago's south side. it actually started two days ago bringing about a third of the city's fire department to help. firefighters had it under control yesterday but the warehouse began burning again this morning. the building is filled with old timber that rekindled the flames this morning. right now crews are gaining an upper hand on the fire. take a look at this. it got so cold in new york overnight that the fountain in bryant park froze. arctic air sent temperatures plummetting. it's 12 degrees in new york right now and the coldest temperatures are expected later today and some victims of superstorm sandy are trying to

get by with propane heaters because the utilities haven't been restored yet. >> craze is i. >> up in minnesota, i hear it's so cold there, you know, it's like 30 below. >> it's dangerous. your skin freezes like that outside. wind chills minus 50 degrees up there. isn't it nice to be in the bay area? >> yeah. >> 52 when i got up this morning. >> and we're worried about a few showers. a lot of clouds and we had that nice rainfall yesterday. we're not done with it yet. the lows that brought showers sagging to the south a lot of the moisture streaming up from the south around that system so looks like a chance of a few more showers in our forecast for today. cloudy skies right now, we are seeing a couple of patches of fog in the valleys. visibilities down to a half mile in santa rosa. this afternoon, a chance of some scattered showers really a lot of that especially to the south as this low is dropping in that direction but the rotation around that is bringing some of those clouds and the rainfall back into the bay area. so an unsettled weather pattern.

keep that umbrella handy. you may need it from time to time. not going to be a rainout but a chance of more showers on the way. computer model handles it well. showers early on to the south and looks like that's continuing into the afternoon just widely scattered stuff on and off. and then it looks like things continue tonight, as well. so going to keep things unsettled. temperatures around the state mainly on the cool side only the 50s and 60s. not cold enough for much snow across the sierra nevada only at the highest peaks. 50s and 60s for highs today for us. next couple of days a lot of clouds, colder temperatures, colder storm system moves -- colder storm system moves in on sunday bringing a chance of showers. let's check the roads with elizabeth. >> the roads may be a little slick outside this morning. we are heating up a little bit on the roads, as well. we are seeing a few more accidents. this accident at richmond is now cleared to the right-hand shoulder westbound 80 approaching central avenue but we are still seeing brake lights back to pinole, hercules. you can see those yellow traffic sensors showing speeds under 40 miles per hour.

its own high expectations. investors getting used to blockbuster quarters, one quarter after another, didn't get that in the recent quarter even though apple sold a record number of iphones and ipads. still missed expectations on those levels. even though its profit came in at more than $13 billion, revenue over $54 billion, its shares are hammered this morning. right now they are down about 11% wipings out about $50 billion in market cap for apple weighing on the tech sector today. better news for netflix which turned a surprising profit in the recent quarter adding more than 2 million u.s. subscribers in the process. revenue was up to around $945 million and investors are cheering netflix. its shares are skyrocketing up almost 43% at more than $147. weekly jobless claims falling by another 5,000 to
